Japanese Tea Service

  • Side Street Studio Arts 15 Ziegler Ct. Elgin, IL 60120 (map)

Side Street Studio Arts' INSTALL show charged local artists with transforming an assigned space in the gallery. Chashitsu - container of light is an installation and performance taking place in the gallery storage closet, featuring live tea service in the style of the Japanese tea ceremony.

Sen no Rikyu, the 16th-century master credited with creating the Japanese tea ceremony known today, taught four essential principles of the ceremony: harmony, purity, respect, and tranquility. The chashitsu, tea room, is a symbol of these values.
